The Federal Government has committed ongoing funding for the new Genomics Australia, including $30 million in its first four years.
Announcing the funding on Friday Health Minister Mark Butler said Genomics Australia would focus on turning significant breakthroughs in genomic research into the everyday care of patients.
The new body, which starts on July 1 next year, will be a non-statutory entity within the federal Department of Health and Aged Care, with a commissioner to provide expert advice to Government.
The Commissioner will be supported by expert advisory committees comprising researchers, clinicians, industry, consumers and First Nations people.
In a statement Mr Butler said the Genomics Australia would work with states and territories to implement an updated National Health Genomics Policy Framework.
He also acknowledged the important role of Australian Genomics over the past decade in supporting researchers and the integration of genomic technologies into the Australian health system.
