The final paper in a series of six papers on implementing reproductive genetic carrier screening (RGCS) across Australia has been published.
The implementation research studies focus on the barriers and enablers for health care practitioners, who are key to delivering RGCS into mainstream clinical care.
They draw on information generated during Australian Genomics’ Mackenzie’s Mission project, the $20 million study into genetic carrier screening for couples wanting to have children.
The implementation research team longitudinally surveyed more than 600 general practitioners, obstetricians, midwives, nurses and genetic healthcare professionals, and interviewed 31 of them.
The research found that “non-genetic” healthcare practitioners’ such as GPs prefer a comprehensive and supported model of care for providing carrier screening and will need a range of strategies such as an accessible patient information website plus genetic counsellor and peer support.
