Join Australian Genomics’ DNA dialogue seminar, “Towards preventing transmission of mitochondrial DNA disease”, featuring Prof Mary Herbert from Newcastle University in the UK.
Reproductive technologies known as “Mitochondrial Donation” aim to uncouple the inheritance of the mitochondrial and nuclear genomes have the potential to enable women who carry pathogenic variants to have a genetically related child with a greatly reduced risk of developing mtDNA disease. Mary will discuss preclinical research and clinical implementation of mitochondrial donation in the UK as well as progress towards its introduction here in Australia as part of the MRFF-funded MitoHOPE initiative.
About the speaker
Mary is Professor of Reproductive Biology at the Biosciences Institute, Newcastle University and Scientific Director at the Newcastle Fertility Centre in the UK. She is a Fellow of the UK Academy of Medical Sciences and Royal College of Pathologists. Mary has been at the forefront of the development of technologies to introduce Mitochondrial Donation in the UK and last year joined Monash University as Professor of Reproductive Biology where she is establishing a joint Newcastle-Monash research initiative to improve reproductive outcomes for women, including those at risk of transmitting mitochondrial DNA disease. She will make a major contribution to the MRFF-funded AU $15m MitoHope initiative to pilot mitochondrial replacement treatment in Australia.
About DNA dialogue
With the wealth of genomic expertise internationally, this seminar series is a forum for members of the genomics community in Australia and beyond to learn of new developments in health genomics, and the overseas experience.
The topics are diverse, including data sharing, ethics, carrier screening, cancer genomics, genomics in emerging health systems, and more.
DNA dialogue seminars are held live via zoom and registration is open to anyone working in, or impacted by, medical genomics. You can register for this event here and we encourage you to spread the word about this series.
